Best Angling Bets 2014

Week of September 1

The ocean piers are alive with action. Blues, spot, croaker, flounder, and pompano can be found most days. When fishing on the various piers, I would recommend the following steps: watch, ask and fish.  There are many good techniques to use – sometimes your tried and true method just may have to be changed. Check the local fishing reports for the best action – water temperatures can fluctuate north and south and so do the various species.

Surf fishing from Corolla to Hatteras has been very good. Most fish are on the small size with an occasional slot size puppy drum or flounder. When fishing in the beach, I use light tackle and just enough weight to hold the bottom. Fish up close – no more than 10-15 feet in the wash. Also look for gravel piles and steep slopes on the beach. pompano like to wait in the wash for small and fleas to wash out.

Daniels bridge has been great in the morning and evening. Some nice black drum and speckled trout. Throw in a mix of spot, flounder and croaker and there you have a standard summer faire.
